Historically women have never had a huge presence in the construction industry. With the exception of World War II, when "Rosie the Riveter" drew countless women into factories to learn trades, women for the most part have been absent on the work site. That is starting to change.
The number of women entering the trades, while still relatively small, is growing. Consider information released by Statistics Canada last year that indicated a 38% increase over five years for enrollment by women in apprenticeships for building construction trades. There was a 68.9% increase for women in electrical and related apprenticeships, a 33.3% increase in industrial and mechanical trades and a 115% increase in metal fabricating trades. For the professional careers, such as architecture and engineering, the female presence is steadily increasing. However, opportunities in the construction industry are not just limited to the traditional trades or the professional careers. While both offer excellent career paths, work opportunities within the industry also include inspecting, construction management, project management, consulting, drafting, quantity surveying, all levels of design work, developing, or managing your own contracting business. The possibilities are endless, and the money goes from good to 'the sky is the limit'- it all depends on your ability and desire to succeed. On April 15th, the BC Construction Association will be hosting an event designed to celebrate "Women in Construction". Our 1700 corporate members from across the province want to encourage young women to consider careers in construction. We want to them to recognize the opportunities that exist and help remove the perception that construction is a man's world. The event will include a construction site tour for approximately 200 high school students and a luncheon featuring a number of high profile women from the industry talking about their experiences working in construction. The luncheon event will be webcast live, so stay tuned to this website for further details on how to join in to this exciting look into Women in Construction.
